15. 最近のお仕事とか同僚でやったコンペとか

ご無沙汰してます。仕事はSchematic Design(SD)が終わりDesign Development (DD)に入って１ヶ月弱が経ちました。日本で言うところの企画設計が終わり基本設計が中盤に差し掛かったと言うところでしょうか。基本設計中盤で大きなミーティングがあり、資本家たちの前でのプレゼンもうまくいき、これから資金調達をクライアントがしている間にこちらはConstruction Document(CD)作成に向けて詳細を詰めていき始めているところです。アメリカでは初期段階に後々の変更も考慮しつつコストに関する契約をかなり早い段階から取り決めるので、この段階が一番重要と言っても過言ではありません。毎日各種コンサルタントやクライアントとミーティングを繰り返し、不確定要素を排除していきます。僕が携わらせてもらっている案件は現状かなりチャレンジングな部類なので、入念に構造設計や設備設計、施工側のコンサルタントと打ち合わせを重ねています。僕の素朴な疑問が議題になることもあります。

特に今回の敷地は地下鉄沿線にあるので、市だけではなくMTA(NYの地下鉄バスを管理している会社）に対してもドキュメントを作成しなければならないので緊張感を持って取り組む必要があります。このためかなり構造的にチャレンジングな提案をしています。もちろん僕にできることは限られていますが。

海外インターンにはいろいろな働き方があると思います。６ヶ月を大手アトリエ（OMAやBIG）などでコンペチームに配属されればさほど学校の設計課題と変わらない大きなスケール（しかも実現可能性のある）でのSD(or Predesign)を数回経験できると思います。大規模なところは実施設計にはそのプロがすでにいると思われますので、機会があったとしても図面修正程度のコミットになるかと。

これに対し小規模なところはオフィスによると思いますが、コンペをかなり責任の大きなポジションでやらせてもらえるか、実施設計を入念にやらせてもらえるかになると思います。一方でコンペの規模が小さかったり、事務所によっては給料が安かったりします。

インターンとしては半年で数回SD以前の段階で雇用するのが一番コスパがいいとされています。というのも実務経験のビハインドは大きく、実施案件に責任を持たすことができないからです。そんな中、幸運なことに僕は半年でメインで一つのプロジェクトを手伝わさせてもらっています。（他のプロジェクトでボーディングやミーティング直前でヘルプで資料作成を手伝ったりしたこともあります。）予定では僕が帰ると同時にCDが終わる手順ですので、施工前の段階を一通り経験させてもらえるという幸運。事務所に頭は上がりません。毎日挫折しながら頑張らないと。。

9月末くらいからこちらでは各大学のセメスターが始まり、各大学での公開レクチャーなども盛んになってきたNYですが、9月から10月半ばにかけてコンペや個人製作などに時間が割かれ結構バタバタしてました。冬が来る前に、土日は東海岸をぐるぐる回って旅してるので平日フルタイムインターンしながら英語と建築の勉強しながら隙間時間に製作するのは鬼ハードで、最初のアウトプットとしては二つあまり満足のいくものはできなかったですが、気を取り直して年内にもう一度はアウトプット出せたらと思います。写真は個人的に同僚とトライして負けた国際コンペで製作した資料の一部です。どうせなら現代日本にあまり馴染みのないテーマをと、過密都市のAffordable Housingのコンペに挑戦したのですが、短期間だった故リサーチもディティールの詰めも甘かったという反省。建築需要の増加の見込まれるインドの都心で余剰建材になり得る仮設足場を利用して数パターンのユニットを作る提案をしました。アメリカ人と協働でやったのですが、１時間睡眠を２週間続けると言った荒技を使えずおそらく自分の人生の設計課題で初めて時間不足が頭をよぎったコンペでした。ひとまず挫折もまた経験ということで。僕のスペックが低いのか英語使うと自動的に頭フル稼働状態になって疲労が何倍にもなり。。いや、純粋に年齢のせいという説もある。。

個人的にNY在住の友人たち（アトリエ勤務二人と広告会社勤務一人）と製作したインスタレーションもありますが、諸事情につき内容と写真は個人的にお見せします。

My work has been nearly a month since Schematic Design (SD) finished and entered Design Development (DD). There was a big meeting in the middle of the DD, a presentation for the capitalists also has gone well, and while the client is procuring funds from now on,  so considering the details for Construction Document (CD) is start. In America, it is not an overstatement to say that this stage is the most important, as considering the later changes to the initial stage and the contract about the cost from a very early stage. We repeat meetings with various consultants and clients everyday to eliminate uncertainties. Since the projects that I am engaged are quite a challenging kind at the present time, we carefully planned to discuss with the consultants on structural engineer, mechanical engineer, and construction side. My simple questions sometimes are picked up as an agenda.

  Since this site locates on the subway line, we need to create a document for MTA (a company that manages NY's subway and bus) as well as city, so we need to work with tension. For this reason we make a proposal that is rather structurally challenging.

   I guess that there are various ways of working in overseas interns. If you are assigned to a competition team for 6 months with a large atelier (OMA or BIG) etc., you can experience SD (or Predesign) with a large scale (and possibly feasible) that is not different from the school's design tasks. Because it seems that the professionals already exists in the implementation design on a large scale office, even if there are opportunities, it would be a commitment degree of drawing correction.

  On the contrary, I think that it depends on the office, but you will be able to do the competition in a considerably responsible position, or to make the implementation designs elaborate. On the other hand, the size of the competition is small, and depending on the office the salary is cheap.

  As interns, it is said that hiring several times in half a year before SD is better for the wallet. The reason behind the practical experience is so big that we can not take responsibility for the project. In the meantime, fortunately I have been helping one project by the main in half a year. (In other projects, I sometimes help to prepare materials with help just before boarding and the meeting.) Since the schedule is the procedure where the CD ends at the same time as I go. I would like to try hard while I am frustrated everyday...

   From the end of September, the semester of each university began and the opening lecture at each university and other places became popular NY, but from September to the middle of October it took time to compete and personal production, etc.  Since I travel around the east coast on each weekends, it is hard and hard to produce in English in other time than working time, and as for the first output I can not do much satisfactory. However, I will take care of it again and put out the output again within this year. The picture is part of the document made with the losing international competition(made by my partner). There is also an installation that I personally created with friends living in New York, but the picture is another opportunity.
