11. インターンのお話です

二週間ほど空いてしまいました。ご無沙汰しております。最近はSo Drunkな毎日でした。マンハッタンのnight lifeは充実してきましたが、遊びすぎて少し反省。平成最後の夏も終わったし節約と勉強を再開します。海外インターンは孤独とたくさんの先輩から聞いていたのですが、色んな知り合いが増えて日本にいた頃よりはるかに楽しいです。笑

仕事の話なんですが、この前事務所内の議論では施工コストやメンテナンスコストの面で却下された案なのですが、クライアントミーティングでひっくり返ると言うどんでん返しがありました。僕のパースを見てくださったクライアントが気に入ってくださって、高いけどやってみたいという話になったのです。

具体的には、現在NY市内の既存建築(100年ほど前)に増築する学校のプロジェクトをやっているのですが、増築部のガラス張りの構成で、構造部をガラスの外に出すか中に収めるかと言う議論をしていました。

ガラスの内側にすると見た目は普通のガラス張りが既存部にのっかているだけと言うファサードになるのですが、外側にすると柱針ブレースが意匠として現れます。外側にするとまず防水防火の処置が必須になるのですが、既存の防火処理は分厚くぼてっとした意匠になってしまうため、意匠として見せるためには特殊なペイントを塗る必要があります。しかも柱が外側、梁が室内という構成になるので接合部の断熱性能を担保するためにジョイントを発明する必要があります。特殊な防火皮膜は２年ごとにメンテナンスがいるし、そもそも割高です。メンテナンス面でもコンストラクション面でもコストのかかる案です。

構造を外に出すアイデアはコストに無頓着な僕の発案だったのですが、スタディにすぎないパースでもしっかり作りこんだら、それを見てクライアントがチャレンジングな意思決定の方針を示してくださったことは素直に嬉しかったです。もとより所員が有効なコミュニケーションをとっていることの賜物かもしれませんが、クライアントとのネットワーキングは建築デザインに大きく影響を与えることだなということを実感しました。

I have been vacant for more than two weeks. Actually, I have been so drunk these every days. I played a lot then be regretting it a bit. I have to save money in this month. . Many senior students told me the intern abroad is generally lonely, but it is much more fun than when I was in Japan while running to make friends in nyc.

I have to save the quantity of sentence for the sustainability of this blogs. 

This is the article about my work today. A proposal of mine was rejected in terms of construction cost and maintenance cost in the discussion inside the office, but it was turned over at the client meeting.It's a complete reversal. When my client watched the perspective I draw, he is stimulated to change his idea to challenge it. 

I am currently taking on a school project that would build up in an existing buildings in NY city (about 100 years ago), but in case of the glass-reinforced construction of the extension building, we were talking about the problem which the structure would be outside or inside of glasses.

In the inside pattern, it looks just boring simple glass box which is simply added on the existing part,on the other hand, in the outside, a needle brace pattern will be appeared as a design. The demerit of outside is mainly cost performance. If it is on the outside, water proofing and fire prevention are essential, but the existing fire protection process makes the structure itself thicker. So it is necessary to apply special paint to show it as a design keeping the diameter small. On top of that, to consider the insulation effect, it is necessary to invent the joint to ensure the heat insulating performance of the joint. Special fire protection film has to be taken the maintenance every two years and it is so expensive.  It is a very expensive proposal both in terms of maintenance and construction.

The idea of getting out of the structure was my idea because I was indifferent to cost, but because I made firmly the perspective in spite of that this is just for a study, it fortunately  directs the client  to a challenging decision-making policy. It may be a result from the efforts of the staff members taking effective communication, but I realized that networking with clients is a major influence on architectural design.
