12.キャンプで豚一頭丸焼き

先週末は社員旅行でNYシティ郊外にあるボスの別荘に行ってまいりました。みんな家族を連れてホームパーティをする様子はいかにもアメリカの週末って感じです。

しかもBBCで放映されNetFlixにも登場した、Towerhouse初めBridge House, Scholor's Libraryに入ることができ、さらには飲んだり寝たり好きにテント張ってキャンプできたりします。(https://www.netflix.com/title/80213025)
Tower Houseは４階のリビングからの眺めを検討するために現地で1対1のモックアップを作るなど、とても丁寧に作られた家だそうです。構成はシンプルで外観もコルビジェのサヴォワ邸を内部構成をシンプルにしてそのまま縦に引き伸ばしたみたいな感じですが、周りの林に溶け込む外装やアクセントの効いた斜め柱などがとても味のある建築です。リビングに入ったときの解放感は衝撃でした。窓からの眺めは言わずもがな、屋上からの眺めも最高なのです。

そしてそこから徒歩圏内にあるBridge Houseはディテールと構造の創意工夫の嵐で見ているだけでも楽しいです。非常に大胆に三層分の大きなボックスを支えるために天井にケーブルが走っているまさかの張力構造。高低差を生かした空間構成も楽しく、緑に囲まれていることもあって外との関係も豊かです。大きすぎる窓を開閉するためのディティールや、ケーブルのヒンジ部にあたるディティール、大窓にぶっささった暖炉との接合部など見たことのないディテールがありすぎて、デザインビルドの本気を見た気がします。

もう10年以上年に一回この時期に豚の丸焼きを食すことだ伝統になっているらしく、丸一日以上かけて豚を丸焼きにし、元所員も集まり100人以上で豚を囲むのです。なかなか経験することのない週末で、終始多幸感に包まれておりました。いい建築、にぎやかな雰囲気、豊かな自然。幸せってこういうことなのかなって感じ。

普段話さない所員たちも結構話すことができました。AIAでアーキテクトデベロッパーとして登壇するなど個人での活躍が著しい人（個人的に自分の方向性どはまりでファンです）、起業しようとしている人、前職は航空会社で機械設計していた人、political scienceとのダブルディグリーをとっている人、尊敬できるような個性豊かな所員ばかりで驚きました。一応所員として属しながらも個人での活動を堂々としているのにカルチャーショック。。

実はGLUCK+、International なニューヨークの中でも相対的にかなり外国人の割合が高いらしいです。スペイン、ドイツ、フランスなどの西欧系もいればコスタリカなど南米系もいるし、もちろん台湾香港中国韓国それぞれからいれば、イスラエルやインド出身もいます。日本人もアメリカ育ちですが僕のほかに一人いらっしゃって、普段は現場で自分の設計した集合住宅をコンストラクションマネジメントしているためオフィスにはいませんが、こういう事務所全体のイベントでお話しすることができました。数百人以上の大組織設計ならまだしも、せいぜい40人程度の規模でこの多国籍感はアメリカと言えど相対的に珍しいそうです。また、年齢層もきれいにわかれていて、超熟練層と若手がセットになってミドルが少ないのに転職してきた所員は驚いたといいます。超熟練は建築の生産プロセスをほぼマスターして思いのままにプロジェクトを進行できるし、若手はそれをいちから学べる環境にある。組織構成としてもかなり理想的な事務所であることがわかってきました。デメリットはしばしばマスターにかかる負担が大きくなることくらいでしょうか。

今週は余った食材をみんなでキッチンで調理して食べてるので、余韻にひたりつつこれからも頑張りたいと思います。

Last weekend I went to a boss' s villa on the outskirts of New York City as the employee trip. It is exactly the American lifestyle that the way people take their families and play home parties in a weekend.

Moreover, we were able to enter Bridge House, Scholar's Library nearby the Towerhouse, which was aired on BBC and also appeared in NetFlix. On top of that, we could set tents for drinking and sleeping. (https://www.netflix.com/title/80213025)

Tower House seems to be made very sincerely, such as making a one-on-one mockup on site to study the view from the living room on the fourth floor. The composition is simple and its appearance is like simplerSavoy House of Corbusier then make the internal structure stretched as it is, but the exterior is matching with the surrounding forest, and the oblique calm is characteristic in point of the design.  I felt touched at that time entering living room of it first. The view from the window is inexplicable and the view from the rooftop is also fantastic.

And within a few minutes walking distance from there, Bridge House is awesome because you can find like the storm of detail and structure by creative ingenuity. The tension structure of the rain that the cable runs to the ceiling to support a big bold three-layer large box. The space composition making use of the difference in height is also fun, and it is surrounded by greenery and it makes a good relationship with the outside. There is too much detail that I have not seen such as the detail to open and close the unbelievable huge window, the detail which is the hinge part of the cable, joint with the fireplace hanging on the big window. I feel that I saw the Real Ingenuity by the  Real design-build company.

It's the tradition to eat roasted pigs at this time once more in the year more than 10 years ago, we roasted pigs over the whole day and the former staff gathers and surround the pig with over 100 people. I felt fortunate while surrounded by nice architecture, a lively atmosphere, rich nature. 

I could talk quite well with the other member who does not usually talk to each other. People who have remarkable personal achievements such as participating as architect-developers at AIA (personally I'm a fan of his own direction), someone who is trying to start a business, someone whose former job was an engineering design at an airline, I was surprised that only people with a double degree with political science. Although it belongs to this office an a staff member, they are personally active, which is the culture shock for me. 

Actually, it seems that the ratio of foreigners is relatively higher in GLUCK +, even though here is International New York. Some people come from Western European countries such as Spain, Germany, and France, and the others come from South America such as Costa Rica, and of course, Taiwan Hong Kong China Korea are included, and the others come from Israel and India. The Japanese are also working in the US ( she actually grew up in the US), she isn't in the office because she takes construction management of her own designed housing complex on the site, in such events, I can talk to her. Even though here is the United States, such a multinational company is said to be relatively rare. Even if it is a large organization design of hundreds or more, it could be possible but this company hires at most about 40 people. In addition, the age group is also contrasted, and the staff members who have changed jobs because the super skilled group and young people are in a set and the middle class is few are surprised. Ultra-skilled masters mostly the production process of the building, can proceed with the project as desired, young people are in the environment to learn it from one. I have found that it is a quite ideal office as an organizational structure. The demerit is often the burden on the master becomes large.

We cook the surplus ingredients in the kitchen at this weekend to eat it, so I'm hoping to keep on going after taking it all in.
